No doubt, the worst time to have water damage is when you are not home, especially for extended periods of time. Coming home from an awesome summer vacation to water damage isn’t quite what you are ever aiming for right? Unfortunately, this happens more times than not.
Water damage can be caused in various situations including sink leaks, dishwasher leaks, hidden leaks, washing machine overflows, and leaky ac condensation lines and even leaking water heaters. It can happen very quickly and well let’s just say, in a matter of hours, might not be the only problem you have on hand. Mold is likely to grow if there is water damage in your home. Mold is detrimental to your health and within 24 hours after the optimal conditions for growth, mold can begin to grow. Let alone the frustration of having to deal with this, putting you and your family at risk would be outrageous.
With over a decade of experience in the water damage restoration industry, we have seen a few instance that could have been prevented had the homeowners had the right information. We know how stressful water damage can be, and we don’t want you to become another victim. The tips we’ve compiled below are to help you have a stress-free, fun-filled summer vacation knowing that your home is protected from water damage.
Do a Quick Inspection
You know what they say, better safe than sorry right? So let’s do this right! Do a quick inspection before you head off on your summer vacation. Check for leaks in these areas:
Unusually high water bills are a sign that you might have an ongoing water issue. There are cases where leaks may be hidden in slabs or walls. You might notice a small water patch in an area. This should be of concern and looked at immediately. In addition, check doors and windows and look out for signs of a leaky roof.
Turn Off your Water Supply
No water, no water damage! It’s as easy as that. While you are away, turn off your main water supply. If for any reason, you need to leave it on, consider turning off the valves to the points you won’t be using for example toilet, shower, washing machine etc. As a quick test to ensure the water is off, turn one of your faucets to check.
Don’t Neglect the Gutters and Downspouts
Yes, you heard us! We have seen this many times before. It is important that you unclog your gutters and downspouts. Gutters and downspouts left clogged with debris can cause water to pool up and sit there, causing leaks and eventual water damage. Get it done now so you don’t have to worry later.
Ask your Neighbor
Going to be gone for quite some time? Ask your lovely neighbors to check on things for you. Perhaps show them where the main water supply is. And let them know if there are any appliances connected to a running water supply. Then when you get back, gift them a pie!
Protect what is yours
Depending on your situation and the type of insurance policy you have, will determine what coverage you get, if any, for the water damage in your home. Most homeowners insurance policies will cover sudden water damage that come from ‘clean water’. This means that any water from sewer backups or overflows will not be covered. Insurance claims for water damage can be frustrating and sometimes futile. You want to make sure that you understand the clauses and confines of your insurance policy and that you take all precautions to ensure you don’t have to deal with a situation like this. Simply put, protect what is yours!
